Physical Description

Alpheus parvirostris snapping shrimp can be characterised by their distinctive disproportionately large chela (claw) which is often half the length of the animal itself.  The green banded snapping shrimp are so called because of the dark green bands which run horizontally along the dorsal side of their abdomen.  Other defining characteristics of the species include a partly translucent body and their major chela (snapping claw) coloured green with white tips (Banner & Banner 1982).  The tips of the telson (tail) are coloured dark green.
